Biosonification Workshop
Biosonification Workshops are educational ateliers facilitated by J3ZZ and the collective “Nout plant i chant” that teach participants how plants can “sing” by using sensors to capture their vibrations and convert them into melodies. These immersive, participatory experiences aim to reconnect people with the plant world while raising awareness about botanical diversity, particularly Réunion’s endemic flora.
The workshops combine science, art, and ecology through hands-on experimentation with the vibrotanica device technology. Held across multiple locations in Réunion and other regions, these ateliers serve students, educators, and general audiences in natural and cultural settings.

The experimental vibrotanica box device, developed since late 2019, converts plant biodata into sound through sensors and specialized software. The school-based component, Vibrotanica dann lékol, aims to educate students through biosonification workshops and musical creation activities, culminating in performances showcasing student compositions.

Students from Cilaos, Le Baril, Grand Coude, and Montvert les Hauts participate in workshops exploring the connection between the botanical world and musical expression. Workshop components include: Atelier Zilien - a multidisciplinary session combining theater, music, singing, and herbalism teaching participants to perceive aromatic plants through sensory descriptions and emotional responses; Atelier Robinson - focuses on graphic transcription relationships between botany and music using plant-based inks on paper, creating visual representations inspired by natural sounds; Atelier J3ZZ - introduces biosonification technology (patches, synthesizers, and instruments) that capture plant vibrations, allowing children to respectfully observe and listen to plants; Musical Jam - a 30-minute collective performance concluding with guided relaxation.

Atelier J3ZZ introduces instruments for listening to plants, including sensors, synthesizers, and the Vibrotanica box. Children observe and respectfully interact with equipped plants in small groups. Musical Jam - group session with live music performance, concluding with guided relaxation.

Robinson Atelier explores graphical transcription connections between botany and music through direct illustrations. Children create botanical portraits using plant-based inks on paper, responding to sounds produced by sonified plants. J3ZZ Atelier introduces instruments for plant listening, including patches, synthesizer, and vibrotanica box. Children respectfully observe equipped plants and share descriptive words about their experiences. The program concludes with a collaborative jam session and relaxation exercise.
