EUTROPIA — Fabbrica Europa Festival, Stazione Leopolda, Florence — May 4, 2012

Multidisciplinary collaborative performance exploring cultural dialogue across 9 European countries, 250+ artists, EU-funded residencies.

About the Project

Running from July 2011 to June 2013, EUtropia was coordinated by jfc Medienzentrum e.V. (Germany) in partnership with the ROOTS & ROUTES International Network. The project united approximately 250 young artists from nine European countries in a bold artistic collaboration: to discover shared expressive language across cultural and linguistic divides.

Rooted conceptually in the Tower of Babel myth, EUtropia explored both the destructive and regenerative potential of human diversity. Rather than a fixed composition, the work was designed to evolve continuously—each national residency invited local artists to reimagine the performance through their own aesthetic traditions, resulting in a unified yet multifaceted artistic statement that blended rock, pop, classical, traditional, hip-hop, and ethnic aesthetics with visual and dramatic arts.

J3ZZ served as violinist, composer, producer, and performer throughout the project, contributed to the documentary soundtrack, and coached young artists during the Lille residency.

Development & Tour

The live show was developed through intensive residencies in Silkeborg, Denmark (initial conception), Cologne, Germany (artistic development), and Florence, Italy (visual language deepening), then toured across all nine partner countries. The Florence iteration at Fabbrica Europa Festival (May 4, 2012) featured 19 artists from 8 countries performing at Stazione Leopolda, where sophisticated lighting design by Gabriele Termine (Luce Attiva) combined with pre-photographic imagery (paintings, engravings, prints) and digital soundscapes to explore visual expression as a universal language.

The project concluded with the final performance in Utrecht (April 14, 2013), hosted by Stichting ROOTS & ROUTES, marking the completion of a landmark initiative in European cultural collaboration.
