1000 AND 1 REALITIES - FLYING ISTANBUL (trailer)

An international educational animation project creating films from children’s drawings in Iraq, Turkey, and Cyprus. J3ZZ composed original soundtracks for three animated shorts, a documentary, and promotional materials.

Children's Vision, Animated

What do children in Najaf draw? What stories do Istanbul children want to tell? What matters to a child in Nicosia?

1000 AND 1 REALITIES begins with this simple question and trusts the answer. Through participatory workshops, children become researchers of their own worlds, mapping the ordinary and extraordinary of where they live. Their drawings become source material — not something to be corrected or improved, but material to be honored and amplified.

Professional animators then translate these drawings into motion, preserving the immediacy and honesty of the child’s line while extending it into narrative. The result is animation that carries the authority of lived experience — stories about actual places, drawn by people who inhabit them.

Sound Across Boundaries

J3ZZ’s compositional work for 1000 AND 1 REALITIES faced a unique challenge: create music that works across languages, cultures, and geographic contexts. The sound needed to enhance narratives that would be experienced by children in Iraq, Turkey, Spain, Italy, and Cyprus — audiences with different musical traditions, different relationships to the subject matter, different forms of listening.

The solution was not universality, but specificity. Rather than creating abstract “world music,” J3ZZ created soundscapes that honored the particular places and stories while remaining emotionally legible across cultural difference. Music that a child in Istanbul could recognize as their own, and a child in Nicosia could enter into.

This is the deepest work of cross-cultural artistic practice: not erasure of difference, but respect for it. Sound that builds bridges without flattening what it connects.
