CHILDREN TELL ISTANBUL

CHILDREN TELL ISTANBUL

A documentary by animator Olga Pavlenko capturing children’s voices and perspectives on Istanbul. J3ZZ composed an original score that honors the intimate, observational nature of the work.

Documentary as Archive of Childhood

CHILDREN TELL ISTANBUL functions as an archive — a record of what children notice, what they draw, what they say about their city. The documentary form creates space for listening. It asks the audience to sit quietly and pay attention to children’s observations without adult mediation or judgment.

This is a different kind of filmmaking than conventional documentary. There is no narration explaining who these children are or what the city is. Instead, there are children’s voices, children’s words, children’s perspectives on Istanbul — presented with the dignity accorded to any witness.

Music as Attentive Presence

J3ZZ’s score operates in the background — literally and conceptually. The music never reaches for drama or emotional manipulation. Instead, it creates a kind of attentive quiet, a supportive silence that allows children’s voices to remain central.

This is restraint as a form of respect. By choosing not to over-score, not to add emotional flourishes, J3ZZ allows the documentary’s power to come from the children themselves — their observations, their language, their way of seeing.
